Context

Although the agricultural sector employs a substantial portion of India’s population, it faces numerous challenges such as fragmented land holdings, inadequate infrastructure, and volatile market conditions. Hence, collectivization of farmers through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) becomes crucial. FPOs formed by farmers improve bargaining power, enhance productivity, and promote sustainable agriculture. They bring together small and marginal farmers, to collectively engage them in various agriculture-related activities.

In recent years, with government support, FPOs have empowered individual farmers, especially women farmers, thereby strengthening the overall agricultural sector, leading to enhanced food security in India. This led to the idea of women-led Poshan FPOs, with a focus on promoting the production and availability of nutritious food within local communities.

Anuvaad’s Learning Network on Farmer Producer Organizations

  • Evidence around the influence of women’s participation in FPOs in India is scarce. In order to address this gap, Anuvaad Solutions has undertaken a field study in Uttar Pradesh and initiated a ‘Learning Network on FPOs.’ The aim of this Learning Network is to provide a convening platform for experts to share their knowledge and provide guidance on how to promote equitable and inclusive community-driven development through FPOs with the following objectives-

  • Identify the impact of FPOs on food security and community development.
  • Generate evidence on the impact of women-led Poshan FPOs on nutrition of the community.
  • Recognize the role of FPOs at different points of a food value chain.
  • Define the concept of women-led Poshan FPOs.
  • Promote data-informed policy making for the promotion of women-led Poshan FPOs.
